How to elope in Crested Butte Colorado

Getting to Know Crested Butte

The Town of Crested Butte is the historic, walkable main street you picture when you imagine a Colorado mountain village: colorful Victorian buildings, local breweries, and the kind of place where everyone waves at everyone. Then there’s Mount Crested Butte, the ski resort base area a couple miles up the road, where you’ll find gondolas, lodges, and a completely different vibe. Both are wonderful. Together they make this place unlike anywhere else in the state.

What really sets CB apart from other Colorado mountain towns is the geography surrounding it. The whole area is a network of incredible roads that lead to some of the most dramatic scenery in the state.

The Roads That Make It Magic

Gothic Road heads north out of town past the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory into a high alpine valley — it’s the gateway to most of the best wildflower meadows and hiking in the area, and the scenery just keeps getting better the further you go. Kebler Pass heads west over a stunning dirt road through one of the largest aspen groves in North America — in fall, this road is genuinely one of the most beautiful places on earth, and in summer it gives you access to lakes and meadows that feel completely removed from civilization. There’s a few other less well known options too- tons of options for finding the location of your dreams!

Fueling Up: Where to Eat & Coffee

Because I want you to have the full Crested Butte experience, here are the spots you shouldn’t miss:

Secret Stash

Crested Butte’s most beloved pizza spot, tucked into a funky converted space on Elk Ave. Creative pies, cozy atmosphere, and a wait that’s always worth it. Perfect for a celebratory dinner after your elopement or picking up take out for a picnic. Some of the best pizza (gluten free or regular) in the state. And don’t forget to order sticky fries!

Butte Bagels

Fresh, chewy, hand-rolled bagels — the ideal breakfast before a big day in the mountains. Get there early, especially in summer. These are genuinely some of the best bagels/sandwiches in Colorado.

Camp 4 Coffee

A local coffee shop right off of Elk Avenue. The whole building is covered in old license plates, you can’t miss it!

Bonez Tequila Bar & Grill

This is a personal favorite. I feel like Mexican food always hits the spot! They have lighter options like bowls and classics like enchiladas. Definitely don’t miss their guacamole!

THE CASE FOR CB

Why Elope in Crested Butte

I’ve photographed elopements all over Colorado, and Crested Butte holds a very special place for me. Why is it such a good spot? Crested Butte gives you a full range, from a five-minute walk from the car to a full-day adventure, all within a small geographic area.

The wildflowers. Crested Butte is officially designated the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, and that title is 100% earned. In peak summer (typically mid-July through early August although in 2025 and 2026 it was earlier due to lack of snow), the flowers in the meadows around town carpet the ground in color. It’s not subtle. It is overwhelming in the best way. Nothing photographs quite like it.

The variety. Alpine lakes with reflections that mirror the mountains above. Waterfalls that you can practically reach out and touch from the trail. Aspen groves that go on forever. Dramatic rocky peaks. Wide open meadows. This place has all of it, and it’s all within a short drive of each other.

It’s actually accessible. Some of the most incredible spots here require nothing more than a short walk or even just pulling over. Others require a 4×4 and some nerve. You get to choose your own adventure.

A few things to know before you go: The Wildflower Festival happens every July and brings a significant increase in visitors — plan ahead, lean into it, or (my recommendation) avoid it. Trail heads, roads, and restaurants will be much more crowded and it can be nearly impossible to find privacy. Wildflowers are heavily dependent on snowpack from the previous winter, so peak bloom can vary by a few weeks each year. Sunrise is almost always a good idea here — the crowds thin out, the light is incredible, and you get the mountains to yourself in a way you just can’t in the middle of the day.

TIMING YOUR ELOPEMENT

When to Elope in Crested Butte

Crested Butte is a high-elevation mountain town — it sits at about 8,900 feet, with the surrounding mountains and passes going much higher. This means the seasons are shorter and more intense than most places, and timing your elopement right really does matter.

Best season

Summer

Mid-June through August. This is when Crested Butte reaches its full glory — wildflowers, green meadows, melted lakes. Be aware that afternoon thunderstorms are common, so morning ceremonies are almost always the smarter call.

Best season

Fall

Mid-September through early October. Kebler Pass turns into a river of gold. Fewer people, crisp clear days, and the kind of light photographers dream about. One of my personal favorite times of year here.

Limited access

Winter

November through April. Beautiful if you want snow, but many roads close completely and locations are very limited. Best for couples who are here specifically to ski and want to tie the knot on the mountain.

Not recommended

Spring

April through early June. The snow is melting, things are muddy, and the landscape hasn’t come back yet. Truly worth waiting for summer — the difference is incredible and the wait is not long.

WHERE TO SAY YOUR VOWS

Crested Butte Elopement Locations

This is where things get really exciting. Crested Butte is surrounded by public land, which means there are lots of options for where to hold your ceremony are. Keep in mind that most of these locations are best for just the two of you or a small group of your closest people, up to 15 guests max on public land. If you’re picturing a larger gathering, there are some great venues and reservable sites in the next section.

Hiking Locations

Waterfalls

Crested Butte surprisingly has quite a few waterfalls! They’re not on Alltrails or listed on Google, so you’ll need someone who knows how to find them 🙂

Gothic Road

Best known for wildflowers, this road has a ton of different views and pull offs along it. Most spots are super easily accessible, so you can get a variety of backgrounds in a short amount of time!

Alpine Lakes

Kebler Pass

Aspens, wildflowers in the summer, changing leaves in the fall, wide open views

Emerald Lake

Located at the end of Gothic Road, this lake has a beautiful green color and super close up mountain views. You need an SUV to reach it and the last section of road is a narrow shelf road, so just be prepared before heading up!

Off Roading Trails

Crested Butte has some great off roading trails. Since so many people come for wildflowers, hiking, and mountain biking, its often easier to find privacy if you’re okay jumping in a Jeep!

FOR INTIMATE CELEBRATIONS

Small Wedding Venues

If you want the mountain magic but need a bit more structure (a permanent restroom, chairs, ect) or a larger guest count (15+ people) there are some truly beautiful venues in the CB area that deserve a mention.

Private Venue

Taylor River Lodge

A stunning luxury property tucked into the mountains along the Taylor River. Intimate, incredibly beautiful, with access to one of the most gorgeous stretches of river in Colorado. This is a place that needs to be seen to be believed.

Ranch Venue

Cement Creek Ranch

Unique Setting

Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL)

Set in the heart of Gothic Valley — one of the most unique and scenic spots in the entire area. The setting surrounded by wildflower research meadows is unlike anything else you’ll find.

Mountain Venue

10 Peaks Wedding Events

A purposefully designed mountain wedding venue with views that back up to the high peaks. Great for couples who want something more structured without sacrificing scenery.

Garden Ceremony

Mountain Wedding Garden

A beautifully maintained outdoor garden venue near Crested Butte that offers a curated ceremony and reception space with that quintessential mountain backdrop.

Nice Dinner & Reception Options in Town

After your ceremony, Crested Butte’s Elk Avenue has everything you need for a celebratory evening. Secret Stash is the obvious dinner choice for something special. For receptions with a larger group, several of the mountain lodges at Mt. Crested Butte offer private dining spaces — worth calling ahead to ask about buyout options. The CB town itself has intimate wine bars and casual spots perfect for a low-key celebration with your closest people.

BEYOND THE CEREMONY

Things to Do on Your Elopement Day

One of the things I love most about elopements is that your day is yours to fill however you want. Crested Butte makes this incredibly easy because there is so much to do. Here are some of my favorite ways couples spend the rest of their day:

🥾 Hiking a mountain trail (options for all skill levels!)

🎣 Fishing in the Slate or Taylor river

🚗 Off roading to multiple beautiful locations

🛶 Canoeing or paddle boarding on one of the lakes

Taking polaroid photos of flowers and other flora and comparing favorites

🚲 Horseback riding or mountain biking

🚡 Riding the gondola up Mount Crested Butte

Exploring the town and getting lunch!

But don’t feel like you have to adventure all day! Keep things simple and walk Elk Avenue together. Browse the funky local shops. Grab a beer at Irwin Brewing or Brick Oven Pizzeria. Order bagels. Get burgers at Rumors Coffeehouse. Wander. It doesn’t need to be complicated — sometimes the most beautiful elopement days are the ones where you just get to be present with each other in a place that feels magical.

FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN THERE

Tips for Your CB Elopement

  • Sunrise is almost always worth it. I know it sounds extreme, but getting up for a 5am alarm is one of the best decisions you can make. The light is golden, the air is still, and you will almost certainly have your location to yourself. The photos are different in a way that’s hard to explain until you see them.

  • The wildflowers are dependent on winter snowpack. There is no guarantee of peak bloom at any specific time. A low-snow winter can push the season earlier and shorter. A high-snow year can mean flowers into August. Stay flexible and trust your photographer to guide you to where things look the best when you’re here.

  • The Wildflower Festival brings crowds. The annual festival in July is a wonderful event but it does bring more people to the area. If you’re planning around it, book accommodation well in advance and plan for morning ceremonies to avoid the peak foot traffic.

  • Plan for afternoon storms. Like all Colorado mountain towns, CB gets afternoon thunderstorms in summer — sometimes daily. Plan your ceremony for morning, and have a backup plan (or just embrace the drama, honestly).

  • Gothic Road and Kebler Pass are partially unpaved. A regular car can handle most of these roads, but check conditions especially after rain or early in the season. For the more remote spots, a high clearance vehicle makes a significant difference.

  • The elevation will hit your guests. Crested Butte is nearly 9,000 feet. People who aren’t acclimatized will feel it. Let your guests know to hydrate, take it easy on arrival day, and skip the heavy drinking the night before. Altitude sickness at a wedding is nobody’s ideal scenario.

  • Bring layers. Always. Even in July, mornings and evenings at elevation can be genuinely cold. A stunning ceremony dress and a cozy fleece can absolutely coexist.

  • Weekdays are your friend. If you can swing a Tuesday or Wednesday, you’ll have a dramatically different experience than a Saturday in peak season. The mountains feel more like yours.
